“It was a pleasant cafe, warm and clean and friendly, and I hung up my old water-proof on the coat rack to dry and put my worn and weathered felt hat on the rack above the bench and ordered a cafe au lait. The waiter brought it and I took out a notebook from the pocket of the coat and a pencil and started to write"

Inspiring Music: Muse

The drag show was last night, and I had a blast! But I want to wait to post about that until I have pictures to show you, which should be this week. However, it did remind me of something I wished to talk about that inspires me a lot.

I love music in general. Pretty much every sort. Rock, pop, dance, 70's, 80's, 90's, modern, metal, symphonic metal, gothic, emo, classical, instrumental, soundtrack, techno, disco, and even a little bit of hip-hop and country. It's to the point that when I write, which is one of the primary creative things I do, I listen to music in the background, and it always has to fit the mood of what I'm writing about. I've drawn inspiration for writing from songs I hear.

Muse is a modern rock band that I actually found through a STRANGE set of circumstances. Back in the day, I power-read a lot of fantasy series. I read these two at about the same time: the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray--

Which is AWESOME, and I recommend fully because of the creative fantasy concepts and empowered female characters--

And Twilight by Stephenie Meyer--

Which I now really dislike because I think it promotes abusive relationships as ideal romance, and there are a lot of plot mistakes and underwhelmingly developed characters, but still do think has some good concepts (especially the Volturi, anything to do with the Volturi) and used to really love when I was younger.

I would always read the author statements and intros for each book, and I remembered that one of these authors, Bray or Meyer, had credited Muse in her intro as a major inspiration. I had thought it was Bray, and even back when I loved Twilight, I thought Gemma Doyle was a VASTLY superior series. So I bought a Muse album (Black Holes and Revelations) on Bray's recommendation. The more I listened to that album, the more I fell in love, and I could even hear parts of the Gemma Doyle series in it--Starlight was Gemma x Kartik; Knights of Cydonia was the final battle.

Well, imagine my surprise when I went back and I discovered it was actually Meyer who had been a Muse fan. I don't really understand, because I don't hear Twilight in Muse and I don't think of Muse when I read Twilight. It didn't even sound fitting in the movie (don't ask why I watched the movie). Even back when I thought Meyer was good, I know I wouldn't have bought Black Holes and Revelations if I'd known it was her who I'd heard about the band from.

As I went on, I found more songs and albums by Muse and have yet to find work by them I don't like. I've met several friends who also love them. They might just be one of my favorite bands. Ever. Of all time. (Yes, that was a Red vs. Blue reference. I apologize for it. But I'm probably going to pull it again later.)

At this point, I think the best thing to do is just let Muse do the talking. I'll just put a sampler here of some of my favorite songs by them.
